Week 5 Recap

Fern Creek Cross Country 2018 Week 5 Recap

Berea Community Invitational – 9/2218
Finally! Cross Country Weather!  From the moment I stepped outside yesterday morning I had a feeling that our team was going to show up ready to go Saturday Morning.  All week we had talked about doing the little things right in order to give ourselves a chance to do great things on Saturday.  We were rewarded with a FIRST PLACE finish in both the Boys Varsity and JV runs, and tons of PRs and great races on the girls side.  Congrats on a great week!

The design of this course made it nearly impossible to get 2 mile times, so unfortunately I only have your 1 mile and final marks.

Team Place = 1st / 14 Teams

Highlights:
·       No need to even break down the highlights by individual this week – winning the team title was a true combined effort from all of our top-7.  You all put yourselves in position to do great things and you followed through by putting together great races across the board.  Dawayad went out with the lead group, helping to push the pace.  Even though he faded just a bit, he still ran under 17:00 and gave us a top-3 finisher.  Jimmy, not far behind, ran his second-fastest time and gave us two scorers in the top-2.  We do need to mention the ridiculous PR from Greg… taking nearly a minute and a half off of his previous PR.  He broke both the 20:00 and 19:00 minute barriers at once!  Crazy.  Justin ran tough and gave us four solid finishers under 19:00, posting his second-fastest time ever, while Hayden also ran his second-fastest mark.  Youhana continues to round in to form, and as his leg is feeling better it’s very obvious that he is going to be a big part of this varsity group this year.  Sam rounded out the top group, pushing himself to pass several guys from the teams we were competing with – adding to their team score and giving us a more comfortable margin of victory, while also setting a new personal best time. You all played a huge role in our win, congrats on a job well done.

Team Place = No Team Score (need 5 finishers)

Highlights:
·       Tayona was absolutely moving!  A huge PR of nearly a minute and a half, on a course with rolling hills and LOTS of mud.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see her smash that 24-minute mark by the end of the season.  Keep it up girl!  Your attitude and work ethic are amazing.
·       Kaci Dodd was back with us after a week off and our team was much better because of it.  She posts over a two minute PR!  What.  That’s unheard of!  Great job!
·       Back in the 26 minute range where she belongs was Trishna, giving us a solid top-3 in the Varsity race.  She ran extremely well and has improved so much since the beginning of the year.
·       We are very proud of Karuna for the way she ran despite dealing with cramps and hurting from the 1-mile mark onwards.  Despite that she nearly ran her best time and finished the race very strong.  We will get the cramping issue solved and you have great races ahead of you!

Team Place = Boys – 1st / 4 Teams
                        Girls – No team score

Highlights:
·       Congrats to Jayden Jones for WINNING the 4k race!  You ran very well but I still think you can do more to push yourself!
·       JV athletes – check out the 5k equivalent times, based on your 4k performance.  I think those are times that we can all strive for over these next few weeks.  The difference between an OK race and a great race usually has to do with how much mental and physical discomfort we are willing to endure.  I think we can get several of you boys under the 20:00 mark!
·       Great job in finishing your races girls!  Those medals look great!
