Week 2 Recap

Fern Creek Cross Country 2018 Week 2 Recap

Central KY Run for the Gold – 9/1/18
Hot and humid!  Once the sun went down for the Boys Varsity race, the weather became a bit more manageable and the times reflected it.  Unfortunately, our JV Boys and Girls had to deal with quite a bit of intense sun, heat, and humidity.  Although the course itself was fast and flat, the weather definitely had an impact on some of the races.  Despite that, we saw some HUGE PR’s and overall it was a nice night for our team.  Finishing 7th out of 22 teams in the Varsity race made for a nice showing in a race that we haven’t run in a long time.  Take a few days to rest up and we are back at it Tuesday.

Team Place = 7th / 22

Highlights:
·       In the entire history of Fern Creek XC, there have only been 5 athletes that broke the 17:00 barrier.  Dawayad is now one of those elite athletes, becoming the fourth fastest cross country runner in school history.  I wouldn’t expect him to stop there, either.  Congrats!
·       Jimmy continued his assault on the freshman record books, beating his own PR from last week and showing ridiculous toughness with an inspiring kick.  Seriously, that was amazing to watch.
·       We needed a third runner to step up, and Justin did just that, coming very close to matching his all-time PR and showing a huge amount of heart in gaining much-needed places over the final third of the race.  You all can make fun of him all you want in practice, but come race day he is a completely different runner.  One of the toughest kids on our team.
·       Hayden Curtis is a sub-20 runner, ladies and gentleman.  And it wasn’t even close.  I kept waiting for him to back off and it never happened.  You could tell he was giving it absolutely everything he had.
·       Welcome back, Weston.  A new all-time PR despite barely training and dealing with a leg injury?  Just goes to show how big of an impact summer mileage has on performance.  If we can get this guy healthy… who knows what he can accomplish?
·       Youhana is starting to round in to form, knocking about a minute off of his Tiger Run time.  He is ahead of where he was last year, when he finished the year at the KHSAA State Meet.  If he keeps working hard in practice I think we can get him back there.
·       Two races and two impressive performances from Zach.  A new PR and I think we can just assume he is going to to be well under 20:00 all season.  Now to get this man some spikes…
·       Sam Stewart clocks in under 20:00 minutes for the first time, beating his previous PR.  Sorry for missing your splits!
·       Despite dealing with tremendous leg pain, Greg finishes his first race as part of the Varsity group, showing extreme mental and physical toughness in finishing a race in which he was hurting.  He’ll be back.

Team Place = 8th / 8

Highlights:
·       Carter went out bravely, but perhaps a bit too quickly as he slowed down in the second mile substantially.  Moving forward we will be working on pacing with our JV group at practice.  With some better pacing we can get him to destroy his 21 minute PR.
·       A nice race overall from Levi, not far off from his all-time PR.  But again, a large gap between miles one and two and we will work on getting his pacing down in the next few weeks at practice.
·       Joseph continues to get back in to shape after dealing with double(!) knee surgery, knocking some time off his Tiger Run finish from last week.
·       Bul completed his first ever 5k!  Congrats!  There’s nothing like it, and you’re only going to get better from here!
·       A NEARLY 3-MINUTE PR from Ethan!  Although he probably went out far too fast, his fitness is improving daily and I wouldn’t be surprised to see several more minutes come off of his time by the end of the season.  Nice job!

Team Place = No Team Score

Highlights:
·       Check out those PR’s from our girls team!  Tayona ran so well, pushing the pace from the outset, not letting Trishna break away from her, and catching her at the end for a new PR.
·       Trishna took nearly FOUR MINUTES off of her time from last week.  I don’t even know what else to say about that.  It’s ridiculous.
·       Kaci looked strong throughout and brought us to 3/3 PRs in the girls race, following very closely behind her teammates and running a strong race.  We are so happy to have her with us on Fridays and Saturdays.
·       Macie has been running for exactly one week, and already completed her first 5k!  This girl is going to do big things this year as she gets in better and better shape.  We are so happy you decided to join the team!  #toughness
