Fern Creek Cross
Country 2018 Week 4 Recap
Franklin County
Invitational – 9/15/18
The KHSAA classifies Cross
Country as a “Fall” sport. Ok. That was definitely the hottest and most
humid meet of the year. The times will
not reflect the effort that you put in to the race. That particular course is quite tough and the
weather played a huge role in the race.
I am very proud of how well we did in very challenging conditions.

Highlights:
· Congratulations to Dawayad Paul for running an extremely impressive race from start to
finish. Our Varsity group was given a
tough and not ideal starting box location.
Dawayad was patient, didn’t rush to the front, and gradually moved his
way up throughout the race. He wasn’t
even in the top-20 at the mile mark, but he knew the race would spread out and
he could gain places throughout the course.
His top-7 finish is proof of the runner that he has become. Great job, congrats on the medal!
· Jimmy shows more determination in the last stage of races
than probably any runner we’ve had since Iosef Casas. The look on his face with about 800m to go
was one of pure pain, yet he continued to push himself, and gained several
places over that last stretch. Impressive.
· Our third spot looks to be solidly claimed by Justin Sharp at this point in the
season. Who is going to push themselves
to catch this kid? Getting the gap
between Jimmy and our 3/4/5 runners to be a bit closer will not be easy, but I
know that it can be done. This will be
the key to how far we can go this season.
· Zach Beck, formerly of soccer fame, currently of football extra
point fame, continues to impress. Rumor
has it he may be named new Assistant Principal and also take over lunchroom
duty next week. In all seriousness, Zach
ran an impressive race, solidifying his varsity spot. He actually negative-split his last mile, the
only varsity runner on our squad to do so.
Moving forward, we need Zach to be a little less comfortable in the
first mile, to be brave, and push himself just a bit harder in the first
portion of the race. He’s going to be
shocked at what he can do when he does.
Great job.
· Slowly but surely we are converting Greg Moundine from a sprinter to a
long-distance runner. Jayden went
through the same process and it took him some time to get strong in the last
third of the race. Greg is going through
the same transition now. It is extremely
fun to watch. As well as he is doing
right now, Greg’s endurance is only going to continue to improve and he is
going to get faster and faster over those 5 kilometers.
· Hayden and Youhana
faded a bit in the second half of a very tough race – no shame in that, they’ve
got plenty of experience under their belts and plenty of chances to show their
fitness in the coming weeks. We will
need their guidance to hopefully win a trophy at Berea next weekend.

Highlights:
· Congrats to Sam
Stewart for taking 10th place in the race and bringing home a
medal! He ran much like Dawayad did –
being patient at the beginning, surging ahead and gaining places over the
course of the race and finishing strong.
His last mile had essentially no drop-off from his second. A smart race and he was rewarded! Nice work!
· I have no idea how anyone could PR on that course, yet
Jayden Jones somehow did it. His Coach didn’t even congratulate him, at
the time, so hopefully this shout out makes up for it. This kid was posing for photographs coming
around the last turn, so he can clearly go even harder next race and SMASH that
21:00 minute barrier. Big things to come
from this kid!
· A huge (nearly 2-minute!) personal record for Bul Chol in only his second-ever
5k! Nice job! The potential this kid has is evident to
anyone watching him run. He is only
going to get stronger and stronger.
· Carter continues to go out strong with our lead group. He needs to finish a bit harder to reach his
potential, but there is still plenty of season left for him to continue getting
faster and in better shape. At this
point last year he had just joined our squad.
· Joseph Coyle continues to round back in to form after his surgery
and off-season break. It’s fun to watch
this kid get faster each and every race.
· Congrats to Dain
Elmore for finishing his first 5k with the team! The conditions were terrible for it, but he
pushed through and now has a full race to build off of.
· Another week and another PR for Ethan Sells! No idea how
anyone could PR in those conditions but he did it. His next goal will be to never walk in a race
– his third mile was faster than his
second, showing he definitely has the stamina and ability to do it. Once he breaks through that mental barrier he
will continue to see his times rapidly decrease.
· Despite taking a wrong turn and dealing with miserable
conditions Jackson gutted it out and
finished his race without giving in.
Nice work!

Highlights:
· Very proud of Tayona
for pushing through tough conditions to be our top girls finisher. And she ran in the wrong shoes! (please please get your normal running shoes back)
· Trishna was steady throughout the race, as she usually is,
and will be looking to have a faster result next weekend in hopefully better
conditions.
· Karuna was back with us and it was great to see her complete
another 5k. Looking forward to seeing
what our entire group of soccer girls can do next weekend on a fun Berea
course.
· Huge congrats to Macie
and Diana finishing their races
despite sweltering heat and sun. They
are both continuing to get in shape and this race will pay dividends down the
road as conditions improve.
