Fern Creek Cross
Country 2019 Week 2 Recap
Tiger Run
– 8/31/19
We really had a nice night
overall at the Cental KY Run for The Gold last evening. Although individual performances were up and
down, across the board we had quite a few strong races, especially in the Girls’
5k. It was also really nice to see our
full squad together, with the soccer crew able to make it and several newcomers
to the team completing their first-ever 5k.
This was a unique race – a very crowded one at times – and the only time
that you will be running under the lights and on soccer fields this year. Please enjoy your long weekend, and read on
for important details from last night and the week ahead.

Highlights:
· George ran
his first-ever 5k at a blistering pace, and without spikes! He will be ready to move up to varsity next
weekend. He looked stronger and stronger
as the race went on. Great job!
· Gavin PRed
by a single second, but it still counts!
If he can work on his form a bit and get those arms driving, there’s no
telling what this freshman will be able to do by the end of the season. Just like George, his first and second
splits were within twenty seconds of one another, something that shows he’s
going out at a good pace and setting himself up to have a strong second half of
his race.
· Collin dropped
a good chunk of time from last weekend and is one of the most dedicated guys we
have on the team. If he keeps practicing
consistently as he has been, those times will keep dropping.
· Check out the comparison between Ethan’s race
this year and last year! For you
newbies, he’s a great example to look to – hard work pays off, you WILL get
faster if you practice consistently and take care of the things outside of
practice that you can control – sleep, stretching, and your diet. Nice race, Ethan.
· Nice PR’s for both Sean & Kendrick! When you first start this sport it’s an exciting
time – as you get in better shape you will see a lot of time drop very
quickly. Ask any veteran – a PR is not
something that happens that often. Enjoy
your success and let it motivate you to keep training. We are glad you both are giving this sport a
shot and happy to have you on the team.
· William refused
to quit, and showed a ton of heart in finishing his first full 5k! Great job!

Highlights:
· Check out the times of those top-3 girls compared to
last year. What a difference a year can
make. All three of these girls work
their butts off both during XC and Track season. The number one thing you can do to get better
is train consistently and avoid getting injured. These three are proof of that.
· Great race for Tayona, who went out STRONG and
maintained throughout the race, barely missing out on a medal, but securing a
new PR! Great job.
· Both Kaci and Trishna dropped nice chunks
of time from last weekend, and both are already knocking on the door of their
all-time best marks.
· Despite a knee problem bugging her, Kendal
raced her way to a nice PR from last weekend.
Way to hang tough!
· Eva was
smooth and steady throughout the race, and her consistency paid off to the tune
of a minute or so PR.
· Sarah
finished her first-ever 5k! She’s only
going to get so much better from this point on.
We are so happy to have you on the squad!

Highlights:
· Jimmy is on
average about a minute faster than he was at this point last year. Think about that… all of those miles, all of
that hard work, just to gain a minute.
As you all get faster and faster you will see that those all-time PR’s
are very special and hard to come by. The
faster you get, the harder it becomes to drop time. We are so proud of this kid, and to come in
second in a race this big is a testament to all of the work he puts in both in
and out of practice.
· Mickey
broken the 18-minute mark for only the second time in his career. In truth, he only ran a few XC races for us
last year, even though he has always run track.
If him and the other soccer boys can get just one or two runs in per
week there’s no telling what they can achieve on the XC course. Mickey went out a little too slow and got
hung up in the crowds, so it will be exciting to see what he can do moving
forward.
· At this race last year, Weston ran a PR of 19:15
on a broken bone. He was lost for the
rest of the season. After a long rehab
process, he’s back and a huge part of our team.
I know he’s bummed about the 19 next to his name, but he will be back
under there soon. Just keep working and
stay healthy!
· A HUGE step up from Xavier! Wow! This
kid is just learning how to handle the 5k distance – how to pace, how to not go
out too fast, when to surge. But he’s learning
quickly and getting in better shape every week.
Congrats on your big-time PR. Keep
yourself healthy, keep working, and those times will keep dropping.
· Trey ran hard despite dealing
with a tough blister. He’s one of the
most motivated new runners I’ve ever met.
Don’t count him out. He’ll bounce
back.
· We are still figuring out
the back-end of our Varsity crew. (Friendly)
competition is a great thing for a team, and we are proud of Zach and Schuyler for stepping up and competing
at the Varsity level.
