Fern Creek Cross
Country 2019 Week 6 Recap
Berea Invitational
– 9/28/19
The Berea Invitational was a
good reminder for us that a Cross Country race is not a race against the
clock. PRs and breaking time milestones are
always nice, and encouraged, but at the end of the day, the goal of a race is
to beat the person standing next to you.
Our team got a great reminder of that today as we had some kids rise to
the occasion and move up throughout their race, while others wilted a bit or
did not go out fast enough to give themselves a chance to truly race their
competition.
Rather than focusing on the
times below, I want each of you to reflect personally on the race that you had. Did you push yourself to the edge of your limits? Were you tough in the woods and moving up
through the field? Did you go out quickly
and bravely enough to give yourself a chance to have a good day?
I know that Jimmy was
frustrated by allowing himself to give in to his competition in the woods… he
nearly made up the deficit, but at that point it was too late. Mickey, on the other hand, was determined to
stay with the pack that he went out with, and was rewarded with a top-10
finish. Sometimes the difference between
a good day and bad day is made before you even show up. If you didn’t hydrate and eat well before
running in that heat then your day was likely decided for you long before you
even got on the course. But if you made
the decision to be comfortable in the second and third miles of the race, then
you will have to live with knowing you could have pushed a bit harder.
Jonathan, for example, pushed
himself harder than he has been lately, and was rewarded for his efforts. He’s finally starting to figure this running
thing out. Let’s each reflect on our
race, get ready for a tough couple weeks of training, and hope for cooler
weather when we next toe the line.

no meets for a bit, we are going to focus on training hard over this next week

lots of sleep and rest, and making sure you are at practice every day. We are coming in to the home stretch of our
