Week 4 Recap

Fern Creek Cross Country 2019 Week 4 Recap

Fleet Feet Invitational – 9/14/19
It was an early Saturday morning at Charlie Vettiner Park as the Cross Country team arrived just as the sun was rising and temperatures were beginning to warm up.  For the first time this season, all of our women and men had the opportunity to run together in one big combined race.  It was pretty neat to see all of our teammates toe the line together as one group, and even nicer to see you all matching in those crisp, white FC uniforms!  We had some very exciting and encouraging performances from a lot of our athletes.

Boys Race

·       There’s not much else you can say – Jimmy now holds the school-record for the fastest 5k at Fern Creek.  This is a tremendous individual accomplishment, and he’s in no way done yet.  In this sport we are forever moving forward, pushing ourselves, and though a record is a great time to stop and reflect, I know that he will be right back to work next week.  Great job, Jimmy, we are so proud of you.
·       Jimmy ran two 5:05 splits for his first two miles, which allowed him to have the gas left in the tank to really hammer that last mile and go for the record.  It was his race strategy, not his talent alone, that allowed him to finally break 16.
·       Speaking of race strategy, Mickey, went out at a great pace for him – 5:23 – and then hit his second mile at 10:58 for 5:35 second mile.  This too, put him in a great position to finish strong, but rather than having to move up through so many people as he often does, he was able to maintain his positioning which led to his HUGE PR.  Great job! Low 17s is MOVING.
·       Weston put together another solid race after last week’s effort at Rumble, and was able to get himself a new PR in the process!  This kid has been one of our toughest and most consistent runners since the day he showed up freshman year and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him break through that 18-minute barrier soon.
·       Xavier split 5:40 at the mile and then 6:00 for the second mile, putting himself in position to finish strong – which he did – and grabbed a HUGE PR in the process!  This kid is getting so much better each week and we are so happy for your success.  Now get some XC spikes!
·       Even without spikes George continues to be a solid 5th man for us, as he knocks on the door of 19:00 minutes in setting a new PR at 19:10.  We are going to get this young man running with us a few more days in the coming weeks and he is going to do some big things for our team!  Nice job!
·       How about Schuyler not only breaking the 20:00 barrier for the first time, but destroying it and claiming a new PR by nearly a minute!  With the knee brace off I think he is finally feeling healthy and to see that KICK that he had at the end was to witness a different runner entirely!
·       Last year, before injury, Zach was consistently running on one of the strongest Varsity squads that we had had in some time.  He was a 19-minute runner.  Although he’s been frustrated by his slow start to the season, getting conditioning back after injury takes time and patience.  Today we saw that his patience is starting to pay off.  What a great race from Zach, and I have no doubt he will be back to his old times soon.
·       A HUGE season PR for Collin!  Wow you were moving out there!  As Collin gets his conditioning back, I have no doubt that he is finally going to get under that Freshman year time!  For those that don’t know, Collin ran with us freshman year, but then moved to other sports.  We are so happy to have him back on the team providing that senior leadership and getting better each week.
·       Despite some soreness, fatigue from a tough week of soccer, and just not feeling great, Gavin still wouldn’t allow himself to fall back off of the pace that he is capable of running.  Not every week can be a PR in this sport, and each race is different.  Although today wasn’t his day, the toughness that he showed in hanging in there and gutting out a tough performance will pay dividends for him down the road.
·       Wow, a HUGE season-PR for Carter, nearing his all-time mark from last year, that he didn’t hit until JCPS Championships.  I could really tell you were motivated and pushing yourself today, and it was great to see you rewarded with a PR.
·       Andrew was fighting it a little bit today, but much like Gavin, he refused to simply fold and pack it in. Those soccer players must be pretty tough.  He is still figuring this sport out a bit, and will need to remember those spikes for next race ;)
·       I know that Dain was really frustrated and down on himself for how he ran at the Run for The Gold, and we had a long talk about just continuing to hang in there and put in the work.  He has now had two solid races in a row.  Just remember, the times may come and go, but you can always control your effort level and the things you do away from practice to get yourself ready to run.  Dain is one of our most consistent kids at practice and I have no doubt he has going to continue having solid races like he did today.
·       Although I know he wasn’t happy with his time, Levi, does so much for our team in leading our JV guys and being such a positive person for so many of our younger runners to talk to and take advice from.  He still contributed in a big way – just like he always does.
·       A big-time season PR for Ethan has him once again knocking on the door of his all-time mark, which he didn’t set until the end of last season.  You could really tell he was WORKING out there and his kick was amazing!   Great job!
·       Another week and another PR for Sean!  Despite some knee soreness after Rumble, Sean was able to be proactive about his injury, getting a knee sleeve and keeping me informed all week with how he was doing.  It paid off yesterday!

Girls Race

·       Tayona went out aggressively – she was MOVING at the one mile in 6:50 – and was rewarded with her first-ever sub 23 performance!  Great job on your new PR!  We are so happy you are on this team and the leadership that you show in constantly keeping your teammates motivated and together is amazing.
·       Kaci was back under 24 minutes again and set a new PR in the process!  Great job girl!  I love that you didn’t settle – even though you and Trishna run that first mile together typically it was nice to see you run your own race and push YOUR pace – and you were rewarded with a new PR!
·       Speaking of PRs… Trishna grabbed one as well!  She broke the 24 minute barrier for just her second time, and first this season!  Her strong final mile allowed her to run the fastest 5k she ever has!
·       Although I know she was bummed by her time, I love watching Eva run.  She is always so consistent – finding her pace, never walking, and she always gives every ounce of effort that she is.  We are so glad you joined this sport all the way back in the summertime and there are way more PRs in your future.
·       It was great to see Diana back out there running and competing after being so sick the last few weeks!  The times will come, just keep working hard!
·       Abi and Kylie completed their first-ever 5ks!  This is a great accomplishment and something to be very proud of!  From here you will only get better and better!
