Fern Creek Cross
Country 2019 Week 1 Recap
Tiger Run
– 8/24/19
I was really pleased with our
preparation Saturday morning. When I
arrived at the school most athletes were already there and ready to go with
uniforms, warm-up clothes, and everything they needed in order to be able to
race. After a disjointed week with
several canceled practices, it was nice to be greeted with mild weather on race
day. With such a young team, our veterans
did a nice job in getting everyone organized and ready to go.

Highlights:
· Jimmy set a
new PR (personal record) and became the 2nd fastest runner in Fern
Creek History, passing former great Sair Salgado – who’s now running for Berea. He was also the first JCPS finisher.
· Weston PRed
by a full minute! All of the summer
miles he put in clearly paid off – now you all see why I try to get you out for
summer practices.
· Both Jimmy and Weston had 1st/2nd
mile splits less than 20 seconds apart.
As you all get more experienced with racing, this is what you should strive
for. Having consistent splits in the
first two miles gives you a chance to gain places and race strong in the final
mile.
·
Trey completed his first-ever 5k for Fern Creek and broke
the 20-minute barrier. With more
conditioning under his belt he is going to destroy that time as the season goes
on.
· The same goes for Xavier, who ran a solid race
after only about two weeks of training.
X slowed a bit towards the end of the race, which is natural for a new runner. Yet, when he got to his kick, he had more
speed left than he thought. In the
future he is going to push himself a bit harder in that third mile and really
show what he’s capable of. Great job!
· Collin and
Carter both had tough races in their jump up to the Varsity-level, but we
acknowledge that we threw them in to a difficult situation after perhaps not as
much summer running as they would have liked to get in. They will bounce back.

Highlights:
·
Schuyler ran a nice race, especially after not having trained
as often in the past few weeks. His
summer mileage clearly served him well as he almost met his PR of 20:21. I bet he breaks it next weekend running
Varsity. Great job!
·
Gavin ran a super impressive race for a freshman, battling
hard and coming in under the 21-minute mark.
This kid has a TON of potential.
· At this time last year, Dain was not even yet
running 5ks for us. This year he is starting in a much better
place than last year and I’m very excited to see how he progresses for us.
· Look at that difference between Ethan’s 5k here
last year and this year! A MASSIVE difference. Now if only we could convince him to stick
with Track in the Spring…. Great job, Ethan!
· Trent, Sean, Connor & Kendrick all completed their first-ever 5ks! Great job guys! There are so many people that will never push
themselves in the way you just did. You
all are only going to get so much better this year as you continue to train and
learn how to race. We are so proud of you
and happy you gave this sport a try.

Highlights:
· Our girls are amazing.
After trying to get all of the JV boys splits I was worried about their
preparation, but quickly saw that they were already warming up and got to the
line with plenty of time. Great
leadership amongst this group.
· Tayona ran
very well for dealing with headaches all morning, and isn’t far off of her
all-time PR.
· Kaci was
also not far off of her PR and seemed to grain strength as the race went on,
moving up throughout the field, which is exactly what we want our runners to do.
· Trishna is
so far ahead of where she was last year – she’s going to have a great season.
· Kendal, Eva,
and Diana all ran strong, with Kendal and Eva completing their first-ever
5ks for FC. And check out the
three-minute improvement for Diana compared to where she was at this point last
season. We have a lot to be excited for!
