Fern Creek Cross
Country 2018 Week 1 Recap
Tiger Run
– 8/21/18
Overall I was very pleased
with our first true 5k race of the season.
We had nearly the entire team to the bus on time, athletes were prepared
and ready to run, and needed very little direction in setting up or taking down
our team camp. Although it seems like a
small thing, setting up our camp on time allows runners to focus on their race
prep, without being stressed about getting to the line on time or running
late. Great job! We had several strong performances, but
several areas in which to improve as well.

Highlights:
· We had a fantastic 1-2 combo with Dawayad and Jimmy
both running strong in the 17s. Now we
need a third runner to step in to the 18s.
· Dawayad went out perhaps a bit too fast, but
nevertheless was extremely brave in putting himself within the top-10 at the
one mile mark. Moving forward he will
need to battle a bit harder in the latter half of the race.
· Jimmy’s 17:31 is already faster than former FC Greats
like Kyle Young & Dane Thomas. Not
bad for his first 5k.
· Zach Beck certainly showed he’s more than just a
soccer player, clocking a sub-20 performance in his first 5k, the day after a
tough practice on the pitch. Not only
that, but the way he raced was awesome, seemingly getting stronger and stronger
throughout the race as he realized he had the strength to continue passing
other runners. Probably one of the best
races I saw all day.
· Justin ran a very solid race, coming close to his
all-time PR and clocking in nearly a minute faster than his 2017 Tiger Run.
· Sam showed that the miles he put in over the summer is
going to pay dividends in his Senior season.
A 2-minute improvement from last year is no joke.

Highlights:
· Greg ran a GREAT race.
He will be looking to join the varsity squad this week for several
workouts, and at next week’s Run for the Gold.
· Carter and Jayden were right with Greg at the 1-mile
mark, and both ran extremely well and ended up with PRs. Congrats!
· At this race his freshman year Levi was around the 30
minute mark. Last year he was near
25. His transformation has been
incredible and it’s obvious all of the miles that he puts in are paying off.
· Joseph Coyle literally has no knees right now and
still went out and ran a 5k. Couldn’t be
more proud of him, and he did a great job leading our JV group today as well.
· Ethan finishes his first 5k! Congrats!
You’re only going to get better from here.

Highlights:
· I absolutely LOVE coaching our girls team this
year. You all bring such positive energy
to practice and races and always have the best attitudes.
· Tayona ran so strong in her first 5k, with great
splits across the board. Proud of you!
· Karuna and Kacie made like Zach and proved that soccer
players can do a little distance running as well! You all make our team so much better and we
are very happy to have you. You are only
going to get better as you get more races under your belts. Great job!
· Trishna was smooth and steady all race. Only two weeks ago she was stopping during
practice and talking about quitting – now she’s running entire 5ks! You are going to improve so much this season
if you just keep working as hard as you do!
· Luisa and Diana were both told their goal was to
complete 2 miles today. Ignoring their
Coach (for the better), both did the entire thing! I am so proud of both of you.
